"[The director, Fred] Anzevino was spectacular when it came to casting young talent ... here he found a young guy named Matheus Barbee, a recent Northwestern University graduate who plays one of the AIDS patients, among other small ensemble roles. Barbee acts with real honesty and sounds fantastic in what, at this particular production, actually is the most important role in the show."

Review of Diana the Musical for the Chicago Tribune

"Barbee is a force of nature throughout this show. He is a powerhouse. Watching him strut, sing and act his heart out, I had flashbacks of Jennifer Hudson from Dreamgirls. From the first song, 'Land of Lola,' to the last, 'Hold Me In Your Heart,' he is mesmerizing. Listen to him as he sings 'Not My Father’s Son.' It will break your heart. The audience was similarly enraptured based on the prolonged applause each time he sang – especially at the finale. Barbee has been good in other Northwestern shows and is an expressive actor with a strong voice, but he is something else entirely here."

"And then there's one ensemble member ... Matheus Barbee who is, for me, the MVP of the ensemble. He knows exactly what show he is in at every moment, giving 110%. My eye always went to him because he's always just giving something a little bit extra and it was so fun to watch."
